  • Slopes rising above the excavation at a ratio greater than 1 rise over a 3 run must be included in depth calculation for shield.
  • Remove spoils pile from adjacent areas.

  • Daily Inspections of excavations, protective systems, and adjacent areas for possible cave-ins, failure and hazardous atmospheres/conditions. Conducted prior to start of shift and as needed after every hazard-causing occurrence.
  • Stability of adjacent structures, and in-ground installations, and no closer than 10' to above-ground electrical lines.
  • Mobile equipment warning systems, appropriate traffic control devices, high visibility garments.
  • Excavation atmosphere tested if hazard present or expected. Results posted on certificate/permit.
  • Head, Hand, Eye, Noise, Respiratory, Foot, Whole body PPE provided and worn.
  • Excavations less than and greater than 4' are sloped, shield or shored to protect employee's where needed.
  • Manufactures Tabulated Data onsite during installation and removal of protective system. Including inspection instructions, MSDS, technical data sheets and other related documents.
  • Soil has been both visually AND manually tested.
  • Utility Lines have been located AND verified.
  • Excavated and other material stored not nearer than 2 feet from the edge.
  • Ladder extends 3' above landing, is secured appropriated, and within 25' of lateral travel.
  • Excavations >4' deep (6' OSHA) are barricaded/flagged off to prevent falls
  • Excavations left overnight or remotely located are backfilled or plated over to prevent unauthorized entry.
  • No person is permitted under a suspended load.
  • All rigging has been inspected and lift charts are in hoisting
  • equipment.
  • All employees subject to work in and around excavations have been trained to recognize existing/predicable hazards within the past 12 months, both classroom and hands-on.
  • All water accumulated in trenches will be effectively de-watered and discharged only into vegetated areas for infiltration.
  • All stockpiles and un-worked soils are effectively covered to eliminate erosion run-off potential if left unattended.
